After a challenging year, Hybe Label's girl group Le Sserafim is returning to the K-pop scene with their latest release, "HOT."
Departing from their signature chic concept, the group has embraced a more soulful style, showcasing their growth and commitment to their artistry.
On Friday, the five-member group — Kim Chae-won, Sakura, Huh Yun-jin, Kazuha, and Hong Eun-chae — held a press showcase at Yes24 Live Hall in Seoul's Gwangjin District to celebrate the launch of their fifth mini-album, "HOT."
"HOT" concludes a trilogy that began with last year's "EASY" in February and continued with "CRAZY" in August. The album consists of five tracks: the title track "HOT," the intro "Born Fire," "Come Over," "Ash," and "So Cynical (Badum)," each exploring various genres.
Huh, who is gaining recognition as a songwriter in the K-pop industry, expressed her deep emotional investment in the album. "This album features a variety of songs that show a different side of us. We worked hard, drawing from our experiences and lessons from last year," she stated.
For Hong, the group's youngest member, the album holds special significance as it marks her first project with a fresh perspective as she enters her 20s. "Since we're challenging a new genre, I hope fans will get to see a new side of us," she said.
The standout track, "HOT," is described by the members as a heartfelt, autobiographical anthem about pursuing passion without fear. Incorporating subtle rock and disco elements, it represents the group's most serene and emotional melody to date.
Huh elaborated on her role in crafting the track, focusing on "tailoring it to each of the members' different colors." She noted, "'HOT' has a dualistic feel — calm yet dynamic, cold yet burning, while also giving off a somewhat wistful vibe, as if something is fading away."
Kazuha acknowledged the difficulty in achieving the right balance for the song. "The melody is lyrical, but we couldn't make it too sluggish nor too upbeat. Striking that balance was tough," she remarked.
In a notable shift, "HOT" is Le Sserafim's first title track centered on the theme of love. "These days, people tend to think being cynical is cool," leader Kim stated. "But we believe that pouring your heart into what you love, that passion is what's truly cool. That's what 'HOT' is all about."
The group emphasized their love for each other as a core theme. Sakura reflected, "I used to care more about results, but after debuting with Le Sserafim, I've learned that the process is what really matters. You can't change the outcome once it's out of your hands, but you can control how much effort you put in."
Despite focusing on the journey, Sakura expressed her aspirations for the song's success, stating, "If I give my all now, maybe future me will see 'HOT' on the Billboard Hot 100 chart."
Le Sserafim is also preparing for their "EASY CRAZY HOT" world tour, which aims to showcase their dynamic journey thus far. "We want to deliver performances that make people think, 'You have to watch Le Sserafim on stage,'" Kazuha concluded. "We are aiming for perfection in every show."

K-pop 씬에서 작곡가로서의 입지를 다져가고 있는 허는 이번 프로젝트에 자신의 영혼을 쏟았다며 "이번 앨범은 우리를 다른 면모로 보여줄 다양한 곡들이 포함되어 있다. 우리는 작년의 경험과 교훈을 바탕으로 열심히 작업했다"고 전했다.
막내 홍은은 이제 막 20세가 된 그녀에게 이번 작업이 특별한 의미를 지닌다. "이 앨범은 20대에 접어들면서 새로운 마음가짐으로 준비한 첫 앨범이다. 새로운 장르에 도전하고 있기 때문에 팬들이 우리를 새로운 모습으로 볼 수 있기를 바란다"고 말했다.
멤버들이 말하는 주목할 만한 트랙 "HOT"은 열정을 쫓는 것에 대한 두려움 없이 자기 자신을 찾는 마음을 담은 자전적 앤섬이다. 미세한 록과 디스코 요소를 지닌 이 곡은 그룹의 가장 평온하고 감정적인 멜로디가 되었다.
트랙을 만드는 데 중요한 역할을 한 허는 "각 멤버의 다른 색깔에 맞춰 곡을 다듬는 데 초점을 맞췄다"고 전했다. "우리는 이 앨범이 우리의 진짜 이야기처럼 느껴진다고 자주 이야기했다. 'HOT'은 차분하면서도 역동적이고, 차갑지만 뜨겁고, 뭔가가 사라져가는 듯한 애틋한 느낌을 준다"고 설명했다.
카즈하는 그 감정에 공감하며 적절한 균형을 찾는 것이 도전이었음을 인정했다. "멜로디는 서정적이지만 너무 느리거나 너무 경쾌하게 만들 수는 없었다. 그 균형을 맞추는 것이 어려웠다"고 일본 멤버가 말했다.
놀랍게도 "HOT"은 사랑을 주제로 한 Le Sserafim의 첫 타이틀 트랙이다. "요즘 사람들은 냉소적인 것이 멋지다고 생각하는 경향이 있다"며 리더 김은 말했다. "하지만 우리는 사랑하는 것에 마음을 쏟는 것이 진정 멋있다고 믿는다. 그게 바로 'HOT'의 핵심이다."
그들이 가장 사랑하는 것은 무엇일까? 바로 그룹 자체이다.

사쿠라는 "예전에는 결과에 더 집착했지만 Le Sserafim으로 데뷔한 후 과정이 진짜로 중요하다는 것을 배웠다. 결과는 내 손을 떠난 후에는 바꿀 수 없지만 노력의 양은 조절할 수 있다"고 회상했다.
여정에 집중하면서도 사쿠라는 "HOT"이 빌보드 핫 100 차트에 진입하는 꿈은 여전히 포기하지 않았다고 솔직하게 말했다. "지금 최선을 다하면 아마 미래의 나는 'HOT'이 빌보드 핫 100 차트에 올라 있는 것을 볼 수 있을 것"이라고 밝은 미소를 지었다.
그룹은 또한 그들의 급변하는 여정을 담은 "EASY CRAZY HOT" 월드 투어를 시작할 예정이다. "우리는 사람들이 'Le Sserafim은 무대에서 꼭 봐야 한다'고 생각할 수 있는 공연을 전달하고 싶다"고 카즈하가 말했다. "모든 쇼에서 완벽을 목표로 하고 있다."
