Hyundai Motor plans to build its first hydrogen fuel cell systems plant in South Korea, with operations expected to commence in 2028, as reported by the company's labor union on Tuesday.
The new facility would mark Hyundai's second hydrogen fuel cell systems plant globally, complementing the existing plant in China.
The construction is set to begin within the year at Hyundai's main manufacturing plant located in Ulsan, approximately 305 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to information on the union's website.
A company spokesperson mentioned that further consultations between the company and the union will be necessary to proceed with the plan, but did not provide additional details.
Once established, the plant's hydrogen fuel cell systems could be utilized in the Nexo hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (EV), the hydrogen-powered Elec City bus, and hydrogen trucks.
Hyundai's first hydrogen fuel cell systems plant in Guangzhou commenced operations in 2023 and is capable of manufacturing systems to power 6,500 hydrogen commercial vehicles.

확인될 경우, 새 공장에서 생산된 수소 연료 전지 시스템은 넥소 수소 연료 전지 전기차, 수소로 구동되는 일렉 시티 버스 및 수소 트럭에 사용될 수 있다.
첫 번째 공장은 2023년 광저우에서 가동을 시작했으며, 6,500대의 수소 상용차에 동력을 공급할 수 있는 수소 연료 전지 시스템을 제조할 수 있는 능력을 갖추고 있다.
