Hyundai Steel announced on Thursday that it will temporarily close its steel reinforcement bar (rebar) factory in Incheon for the entire month of April due to sluggish demand.
The company clarified that this closure is not a routine maintenance shutdown but a necessary production cut in response to deteriorating market conditions. Hyundai Steel stated, "We have made the decision to normalize the market even if we have to suffer immediate losses."
As Korea's second-largest steelmaker by sales, Hyundai Steel's Incheon facilities have an annual production capacity of approximately 1.5 million tons for rebar and 2 million tons for steel sections.
This decision comes amid declining demand for rebar and falling prices within the domestic steel industry, compounded by global oversupply and U.S. tariffs affecting the steel market.
In response to these challenges, Hyundai Steel previously implemented an emergency management strategy, which includes a 20 percent pay cut for all executives and a voluntary retirement program for employees.

현대제철은 한국에서 판매 기준으로 두 번째로 큰 철강 제조업체로, 인천 공장에서 리바와 철강 부품을 각각 연간 약 150만 톤과 200만 톤 생산할 수 있는 능력을 보유하고 있다.
이번 결정은 국내 철강 산업이 리바 수요 감소와 가격 하락에 직면한 가운데, 세계 철강 시장이 공급 과잉과 미국의 관세 문제로 어려움을 겪고 있는 상황에서 내려졌다.
현대제철은 또한 모든 임원에 대해 20% 임금 삭감과 직원들을 위한 자발적 퇴직 프로그램 등을 포함한 긴급 관리 모드를 발표한 바 있다.
