The host nation South Korea experienced its first loss at the women's curling world championship, falling to Switzerland on Tuesday.
In a round-robin match at the LGT World Women's Curling Championship held at Uijeongbu Indoor Ice Rink, South Korea, led by skip Gim Eun-ji, lost to the second-ranked Swiss team with a score of 9-6. Prior to this match, South Korea had secured victories in its first five games.
With a record of 5-1, South Korea currently holds second place among 13 competing teams, while Switzerland remains undefeated at 6-0.
South Korea's next matches are scheduled against world No. 1 Canada, led by skip Rachel Homan, at 9 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a match against Denmark at 2 p.m. the same day.
The competition format involves each of the 13 teams playing against one another in the round robin, with the top six teams advancing to the playoff round. The two highest-ranked teams will receive byes to the semifinals, while the remaining four will compete for the last two semifinal spots.
Qualification matches and the semifinals are set for Saturday, with the bronze medal match and championship final taking place on Sunday.
South Korea aims to secure its first gold medal at the women's curling world championship, having previously won silver in 2022 and bronze in 2019 and 2024.
In the match against Switzerland, South Korea initially took a 4-1 lead after scoring three points in the third end. However, Switzerland responded effectively, scoring two points in the sixth end and two more in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.
Despite trailing 7-6 going into the final end, South Korea had an opportunity to mount a comeback with the last stone but was unable to execute a successful raise, resulting in two additional points for Switzerland.
In addition to competing for the championship, South Korea is also striving to secure a spot in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. The top seven teams based on points accumulated from the 2024 and 2025 world championships will qualify for the Olympics, and South Korea is well-positioned after earning 11 points with its bronze medal finish at last year's championship.

이번 대회에 참가한 13개 팀은 라운드 로빈 방식으로 맞붙으며, 상위 6개 팀이 플레이오프 라운드에 진출한다. 두 팀은 준결승 진출권을 부여받게 되며, 나머지 네 팀은 마지막 두 준결승 진출권을 위해 경쟁한다.
예선전과 준결승은 토요일에 예정되어 있으며, 그 다음 날인 일요일에는 동메달 경기와 결승전이 열린다.
한국은 여자 컬링 세계 선수권에서 첫 금메달을 목표로 하고 있으며, 2022년에는 은메달, 2019년과 2024년에는 동메달을 수상한 바 있다.
처음 두 이닝이 비어있는 가운데, 한국은 세 번째 이닝에서 3점을 득점하며 5회까지 4-1로 앞서갔다.
그러나 스위스는 6회 이닝에서 2점을 득점하였고, 이후 7회 이닝에서도 2점을 추가하여 5-4로 역전했다.
9회 이닝이 끝난 후 7-6으로 뒤지고 있던 한국은 마지막 이닝에서 해머를 잡아 기회를 노렸지만, 김은지 선수가 마지막 스톤으로 레이즈를 성공하지 못하고 스위스에 2점을 내주며 경기를 마무리했다.
이번 세계 선수권 대회에서 한국은 2026년 이탈리아 동계 올림픽 출전권 확보를 위해 노력하고 있다. 2024년과 2025년 세계 선수권에서 얻은 포인트 상위 7개 팀이 밀라노에 출전할 수 있는 자격을 얻게 되며, 한국은 지난해 세계 선수권에서 동메달을 획득하며 11점을 기록해 좋은 위치에 있다.
