Korean short track speed skaters will compete for direct tickets to the 2026 Winter Olympics at the world championships starting in China this week.
Beijing will host the International Skating Union (ISU) World Short Track Speed Skating Championships from Friday to Sunday at Capital Indoor Stadium, which also held short track races at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Among Koreans, a male and a female skater who wins at least one individual gold medal and leads their team in overall rankings will each receive an automatic spot on the national team for the 2025-26 season, thus qualifying for the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.
Remaining Korean skaters must survive their competitive national team trials, which feature multiple Olympic medalists and past world champions.
Korea has been a dominant force in short track for decades, leading the all-time Olympic medal table with 26 gold, 16 silver, and 11 bronze medals. China follows with 12 gold medals and 37 medals overall.
At the world championships, Park Ji-won, the two-time World Cup overall champion, will lead the Korean men's team. The country did not secure medals in any men's individual races at last year's worlds in the Netherlands and took silver in the 5,000-meter relay.
On the women's side, three-time Olympic champion Choi Min-jeong and 2024 World Cup champion Kim Gil-li will be key competitors. Choi recently claimed three gold medals at the Asian Winter Games after sitting out the 2023-24 season to rest. Kim, 20, emerged as a new star in Choi's absence last season and won her first career world title in the 1,500m last year.
The first day of the championships will feature qualifying races for individual and relay events. Finals are scheduled for Saturday in the men's 500m and 1,500m, as well as the women's 1,000m and 3,000m relay. Sunday will see finals in the men's 1,000m and 5,000m relay, the women's 500m and 1,500m, and the mixed 2,000m relay.

한국 선수 중 한 명의 남성 및 여성 스케이터가 개인 금메달을 최소 한 개 이상 획득하고 팀 전체 순위를 이끌 경우, 2025-26 시즌 국가대표팀에 자동 선발되어 2026년 이탈리아 동계 올림픽 출전 자격을 얻게 된다.
나머지 모든 한국 선수들은 매년 많은 올림픽 메달리스트와 과거 세계 챔피언이 참가하는 치열한 국가대표 선발전을 통과해야 한다.
수십 년간 쇼트트랙에서 지배적인 존재였던 한국은 올림픽 역사상 26개의 금메달, 16개의 은메달, 11개의 동메달을 보유하고 있으며, 중국은 12개의 금메달과 총 37개의 메달로 그 뒤를 따르고 있다.
세계 선수권 대회에서 두 차례 월드컵 종합 챔피언에 오른 박지원이 한국 남자 팀을 이끌 예정이다. 지난해 네덜란드에서 열린 세계 선수권에서는 남자 개인 종목에서 메달을 획득하지 못했으며, 5,000미터 계주에서 은메달을 획득했다.
여자 부문에서는 세 차례 올림픽 챔피언 최민정과 2024 월드컵 챔피언 김길리가 앞장설 예정이다.
최민정은 2023-24 시즌을 쉬고 난 후에도 좋은 컨디션을 유지하며 지난달 아시아 동계 게임에서 세 개의 금메달을 차지했다. 김길리는 최민정이 빠진 지난 시즌에 신성으로 떠오르며 1,500미터에서 첫 세계 타이틀을 획득했다.
챔피언십 첫날에는 개인 및 계주 이벤트의 예선 경기가 진행된다. 토요일에는 남자 500미터 및 1,500미터, 여자 1,000미터 및 3,000미터 계주 결선이 예정되어 있다.
일요일에는 남자 1,000미터 및 5,000미터 계주, 여자 500미터 및 1,500미터, 혼합 2,000미터 계주 결선이 열릴 예정이다.
