LG Electronics Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Cho Joo-wan announced on Tuesday that the company is prepared to expand its production facilities in the United States in response to upcoming tariff policies from Washington.
Cho stated that LG has secured building sites for refrigerator and oven production at its Tennessee plant, which will serve as a contingency if the U.S. imposes tariffs on goods imported from Mexico. He indicated that the company is maintaining the site and constructing temporary buildings to ensure readiness for potential policy changes.
Currently, LG Electronics manufactures washers and dryers at the Tennessee facility and is considering the relocation of some home appliance production from Mexico to the U.S. to evade anticipated tariffs.
In relation to the company's operations in Russia, Cho expressed caution regarding the resumption of activities at the Moscow production plant, citing the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He clarified that LG is closely monitoring the situation and will not take aggressive actions until sanctions are lifted.
Additionally, Cho announced plans to meet with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella later this week in Seoul to discuss their partnership, originally announced in January. Nadella's visit coincides with an artificial intelligence (AI) event in Korea.
Cho expressed confidence in collaborative efforts to develop an AI agent, mentioning that LG's Chiller technology is expected to be integrated into Microsoft's data centers. However, he noted that specific details regarding the scale of LG's contribution still need to be determined.
Chiller technology represents LG Electronics' large-scale cooling solutions, aimed at supporting substantial infrastructures and high-energy consuming facilities, including those utilized in AI data centers.

테네시 공장에서 세탁기와 건조기를 생산하는 LG 전자는 멕시코의 가전 제품 제조 일부를 미국으로 이전하는 방안을 고려 중이다.
러시아 모스크바에 있는 LG 전자의 생산 공장 운영 재개 가능성에 대해 조 CEO는 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁이 계속되고 있음을 고려해 신중한 입장을 보였다.
그는 "전쟁이 아직 끝나지 않았기 때문에 상황을 면밀히 지켜보고 있다"며 "우리는 공격적인 조치를 취하지 않고 있다. 제재가 완화되면 운영을 시작할 수 있다"고 말했다.
또한 그는 이번 주 서울에서 마이크로소프트 CEO 사티아 나델라와 만나 지난 1월 발표된 양사 파트너십의 세부 사항을 논의할 계획을 밝혔다. 나델라는 수요일 한국을 방문해 인공지능(AI) 행사에 참석할 예정이다.
조 CEO는 "AI 에이전트 개발에 협력할 수 있을 것으로 확신하며, LG 전자의 칠러 기술이 마이크로소프트의 데이터 센터에 설치될 것"이라며 "하지만 우리는 여전히 기여의 정확한 규모를 결정해야 한다"고 말했다.
