Manchester United announced plans on Tuesday to construct what it describes as the "world’s greatest" football stadium. The proposed 100,000-seat arena aims to surpass Wembley Stadium as the largest in the United Kingdom.
The new stadium will be built adjacent to the historic Old Trafford ground, allowing the club to avoid relocation during construction. Part owner Jim Ratcliffe emphasized the need for a modern venue, stating, “Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for the past 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in world sport.” He added that the new stadium will enhance the fan experience while maintaining the essence of Old Trafford.
Details regarding the cost and timeline for the project have not been disclosed, although architect Norman Foster indicated that the construction process would take approximately five years. Ratcliffe, who acquired a 25 percent stake in the club for $1.3 billion last year, has prioritized the development of a new stadium.
While the option to redevelop Old Trafford was considered, the club opted for a complete new construction. Ratcliffe noted, “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to the delivery of what will be the world’s greatest football stadium.” United also aims for the venue to contribute to the regeneration of the surrounding Old Trafford area, a project projected to add £7.3 billion ($9.4 billion) to the U.K. economy, with government support already expressed.
Currently, Wembley Stadium is the largest in the U.K. with a capacity of 90,000, serving as the home ground for England’s national soccer team. Other notable stadiums include Twickenham, which accommodates 82,500 fans, and Old Trafford itself, which holds just over 74,000 but is seen as outdated compared to modern venues like the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
United’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, stated that the club's long-term goal is to have the best football team playing in the best stadium. Former manager Alex Ferguson remarked on the importance of seizing the opportunity to create a new home that is fit for the future.
This announcement follows recent protests from thousands of United fans against the club's ownership, amid concerns over cost-cutting measures, rising ticket prices, and ongoing poor performance on the field. The club is primarily owned by the Glazer family, who also own the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Ratcliffe's investment aims to restore Manchester United's former prominence in European soccer, as the club has not won the Premier League title in over a decade. His initial year in charge has been challenging, with the team experiencing its worst-ever Premier League season last year and currently struggling in the lower half of the standings.
