Multiple Russian warplanes entered Korea's air defense identification zone (KADIZ) in the East Sea on Saturday, prompting a response from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
The Russian military planes entered the KADIZ at approximately 9:20 a.m. before exiting to the eastern and northern areas of the air defense zone, according to a notice from the JCS.
The JCS confirmed that the Russian aircraft did not violate Korea's airspace.
Prior to their entry into the KADIZ, the JCS detected the Russian aircraft and dispatched Air Force jets to the area to monitor the situation.
The military indicated that the entry of the Russian planes was part of a training exercise and clarified that there was no intention to violate airspace.
The KADIZ is not considered territorial airspace but is established to require foreign aircraft to identify themselves, thereby preventing accidental clashes.
