The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) announced on Monday that its leader, Lee Jae-myung, has requested a meeting with acting President Han Duck-soo regarding the appointment of a Constitutional Court justice. However, the DPK has yet to receive a response to this request.
According to DPK spokesperson Han Min-soo, Lee has attempted to contact Han twice and has sent a text message expressing his desire for an emergency meeting, but has not received any reply.
The purpose of the meeting request appears to be to urge Han Duck-soo to appoint the opposition-recommended candidate, Ma Eun-hyuk, as a justice.
On the previous day, DPK floor leader Park Chan-dae indicated in a press conference that the party would make a "grave decision" if Han does not appoint Ma by Tuesday.
It is noteworthy that the DPK-controlled National Assembly impeached acting President Han late last year after he declined to appoint additional justices to the Constitutional Court. Han was reinstated following a Constitutional Court decision last week.
Additionally, last month, the Constitutional Court ruled that the previous acting President Choi Sang-mok's decision to withhold Ma's appointment was unconstitutional, violating the rights of the National Assembly.
In response, Han's office stated that the acting president's current priorities include addressing U.S. tariff plans and supporting victims of recent wildfires in the southeastern region, and that he will consider the DPK's request after dealing with these pressing issues.
야당인 더불어민주당(민주당)의 이재명 대표가 헌법재판소 재판관 임명을 압박하기 위해 한덕수 정부권자와의 회의를 요청했지만 아직 응답을 받지 못했다고 민주당이 월요일에 발표했다.
민주당 대변인 한민수는 "이 대표가 한덕수에게 두 번 전화를 걸고 긴급 회의를 원한다는 문자 메시지를 보냈지만 한 측에서는 답변이 없었다"고 밝혔다.
이 회의 요청은 한덕수가 야당이 추천한 재판관 후보인 마은혁을 임명하도록 촉구하기 위한 것으로 보인다.
전날 민주당 원내대표 박찬대는 기자회견에서 "한 정책 권자가 화요일까지 마를 임명하지 않으면 중대한 결정을 내릴 것"이라고 말했다.
민주당이 주도하는 국회는 지난해 한덕수가 헌법재판소의 추가 재판관 임명을 거부한 다음 날 그를 탄핵했다. 한정자는 지난주 헌법재판소의 결정으로 복원되었다.
지난달 헌법재판소는 당시 권자였던 최상목이 지난해 마의 임명을 보류한 결정을 위헌으로 판단하며 국회의 권리를 침해했다고 밝혔다.
한 측은 정부권자의 우선 과제가 미국의 관세 계획과 동남부 지역의 산불 피해자를 지원하는 것임을 강조하며, 그러한 문제 해결 후 민주당의 요청을 검토할 것이라고 전했다.
