Rep. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), continues to be the most favored candidate for a potential snap presidential election, according to a poll released on Monday.
The poll indicates that the DPK's approval rating has surpassed that of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) as the nation anticipates a ruling from the Constitutional Court regarding President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment. Legal experts predict that the court may deliver its verdict later this month, although a specific date has yet to be announced.
Conducted by Realmeter, the survey involved 1,510 adults and found that 49.5 percent supported Lee as a future president. Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo received 16.3 percent of support, while Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo garnered 7.1 percent. Former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon received 6.7 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively.
Realmeter noted that Lee's commanding lead in the poll, which approached 50 percent, was bolstered by his recent acquittal in an appellate trial concerning violations of the Public Official Election Act.
Among the ruling party’s potential presidential candidates, Hong and Han experienced slight increases in their approval ratings, while Oh's rating declined due to controversy over the designation of certain districts in Seoul for home transaction permissions.
Lee's acquittal on Wednesday has been viewed as a significant development that could eliminate ongoing legal risks and strengthen his leadership within the DPK, according to experts.
Political commentator Park Sang-byeong suggested that Lee's acquittal would relieve the DPK's burdens and position him as the party's presidential candidate. Lee is also considered a leading figure among liberal politicians, although other potential candidates such as Gyeonggi Province Gov. Kim Dong-yeon and former prime ministers Lee Nak-yon and Kim Boo-kyum received less than 1.8 percent support each.
The Realmeter poll also revealed that 47.3 percent of respondents supported the DPK, an increase from 43.6 percent the previous week, while support for the PPP decreased from 40 percent to 36.1 percent. More than half of the respondents expressed a preference for a transition of power to a liberal leader in the event of a snap election following a possible ruling that upholds Yoon's impeachment.
If Yoon is ousted due to his Dec. 3 martial law declaration, a snap presidential election would need to occur within 60 days. The poll indicated that 37.8 percent of respondents preferred to see the current conservative party win the next presidency, while 57.1 percent favored one of the opposition parties.
The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points with a confidence level of 95 percent.

"여당의 대선 후보들 중 홍과 한은 지난주보다 소폭 지지율이 상승했으나, 오세훈은 서울 내 세 개 구역을 주택 거래를 위한 정부 허가 구역으로 지정하는 것과 관련한 논란 때문에 지지율이 하락했다."
