The Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) Korea, recognized as the world's oldest Korean studies organization, officially concluded its operations late last year. In response, a group of young individuals has stepped forward to continue its scholarly mission and spirit.
A fourth roundtable event of the Youth Dialogue Program (YDP) is scheduled for this Sunday at 4 p.m. at Space UM, near Seoul Station. The event, titled “How We Resolve Inequality Between Developing and Developed Countries — Focusing on Development Cooperation among Developing Countries," will feature speakers from Gachon University's United Nations Student Association. Participation costs 8,000 won, and RSVPing is recommended. The discussions will be held in both English and Korean.
The YDP is an initiative founded by graduates of Dongducheon Foreign Language High School in northern Gyeonggi Province, serving as a continuation of RAS Korea's mission.
YDP President Kim Gyu-han, who previously served as president of RAS Korea's Dongducheon chapter, expressed his desire to share the value of the contributions RAS could make to the younger generation. He noted that RAS was known for its expert-led lectures, which are rarely available publicly. The roundtable discussions aim to offer diverse global perspectives and promote engagement among young members.
Kim's engagement with RAS Korea began during a visit from its members to his school, where he gained insights into Korean culture from foreign perspectives. After graduating, he pursued international studies at the Catholic University of Korea, attending RAS Korea events before its closure, and subsequently co-founding the YDP with four fellow DFL graduates.
Although YDP is not an official branch of RAS Korea, it has received unofficial support from the organization. Kim highlighted that the critical assistance has come from human resources, enabling them to maintain dialogue programs through ongoing interaction with former RAS officials.
To date, the YDP has conducted three events covering various topics, including the future of RAS Korea and comparative education systems between Korea and the United States. The events typically feature a roundtable format with six to eight speakers and engage primarily university students along with invited experts. For the February program, participants included officials from the Green Climate Fund and an English professor discussing climate change.

세계에서 가장 오래된 한국학 단체인 로열 아시아티크 소사이어티(RAS) 코리아가 작년 늦게 공식적으로 문을 닫았지만, 젊은 세대가 그 학문적 사명과 정신을 이어가고 있다.
젊은 사람들로 구성된 그룹이 오는 일요일 오후 4시에 서울역 근처의 스페이스 UM에서 열릴 제4회 청소년 대화 프로그램(YDP) 원탁 토론회를 준비하고 있다. 제목은 "개발 도상국과 선진국 간의 불평등을 어떻게 해소할 것인가 — 개발 도상국 간의 개발 협력을 중심으로"이며, 연사로는 가천대학교 유엔 학생 협회의 학생들이 참여할 예정이다. 참가비는 8,000원이며 사전 예약이 권장된다. 이 행사는 영어와 한국어로 진행된다.

YDP는 경기도 북부의 동두천 외국어 고등학교(DFL) 졸업생들이 설립한 RAS 코리아의 파생 조직이다.
YDP 회장 김규한은 "RAS가 젊은 세대에게 기여할 수 있는 가치와 능력을 전파하고 싶었다"고 설명하며, "RAS의 핵심 특징은 공공에서 좀처럼 확인할 수 없는 주제 관련 전문성을 갖춘 다양한 강의가 열린다는 점이다. RAS의 역량과 결합한 청년 패널이 원탁 토론회를 열어 다양한 글로벌 통찰력을 제공하고 다양한 다양성을 발견하며 젊은 RAS 회원을 홍보할 수 있다고 믿었다"고 밝혔다.
그는 학생 시절 RAS 코리아의 회원들이 DFL을 방문했을 때 RAS에 처음으로 접하게 되었다고 말했다. "외국인의 강의를 통해 한국 문화나 관련 주제를 배울 수 있었기 때문에 RAS에 매료되었다. 이는 나에게는 일반적이지 않은 경험이었다"고 덧붙였다. "RAS 코리아는 내가 이전에 한국에서 배웠던 것과는 다른 방식으로 한국의 글로벌 관점을 볼 수 있는 기회였다."
졸업 후, 그는 서울의 가톨릭대학교에서 국제학을 전공하며 RAS 코리아의 몇몇 행사에 참석할 수 있었다. 조직이 문을 닫은 후, 그와 다른 네 명의 DFL 졸업생이 YDP를 창립했다.
그는 YDP가 RAS 코리아의 공식적인 일부는 아니지만, 조직이 재부활하기 위해 노력하는 가운데 일부 연속성을 나타내고 있다고 설명했다.
"우리는 공식적인 행사로 진행하지는 않지만 RAS로부터 비공식적인 지원을 받았다"고 말했다. "RAS로부터 가장 중요한 지원은 인적 자원으로, 이는 우리의 대화 프로그램을 지속하는 데 중요한 요소이다. RAS 코리아가 없어졌지만, RAS 관계자들과의 상호작용을 유지할 수 있었고, 이는 중요하다."
지금까지 YDP는 세 차례의 행사를 조직하였다. 이들 행사는 RAS 코리아의 미래부터 한국과 미국 교육 시스템의 차이를 탐구하는 다양한 주제를 논의한다. YDP 행사에는 6~8명의 연사가 참여하는 원탁 토론이 특징이다.
참여자 대부분은 대학생이며, 전문가들도 초대하여 참여하도록 하고 있다. 2월 프로그램에는 녹색기후기금 관계자와 영어 교수도 참석하여 기후 변화에 대해 논의했다.
