Rep. Back Hye-ryun of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has announced plans to pursue legal action after being struck in the forehead by a raw egg during a press conference advocating for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. The incident took place in front of the Constitutional Court in Seoul on Thursday.
Back condemned the attack as “an unacceptable act in a democratic society” and expressed concern over the normalization of violence. She stated that the social conflict stemming from President Yoon’s actions has intensified, leading to dangerous situations where supporters of the president are committing acts of aggression against lawmakers.
Criticizing the response of law enforcement, Back noted that protests are prohibited within 100 meters of the Constitutional Court under the Assembly and Demonstration Act. She urged police to take action against far-right groups that threaten constitutional institutions.
Back also called on the Constitutional Court to expedite its ruling on Yoon's impeachment trial, asserting that a swift decision is necessary to address societal divisions. She emphasized that political pressures should not delay the court's judgment.
The DPK has condemned the egg-throwing incident as a clear act of violence and terrorism. Party spokesperson Ahn Gwi-ryeong expressed concern about the potential for escalating violence from those opposing the president’s impeachment, warning that it could lead to more severe confrontations.

이번 사건은 화요일 헌법재판소 앞에서 백 의원이 윤 대통령의 탄핵을 촉구하는 기자회견을 진행하던 중 발생했다.
백 의원은 목요일 자신의 페이스북에 “폭력의 정상화는 간과할 수 없다”고 적으며 이번 공격을 “민주사회에서 용납될 수 없는 행위”라고 밝혔다. 이어 “윤 대통령의 헌법 질서 훼손으로 인한 사회적 갈등이 위험하게 심화되고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
그는 상황이 “대통령의 강경 지지자들이 의회라는 헌법 기관에 대해 노골적으로 테러 행위를 저지르는 지경에 이르렀다”고 경고했다. 또한 이번 사건이 극우 세력이 확대되는 위협을 반영한다고 강조하며 단호한 법적 조치를 취하겠다고 밝혔다.
백 의원은 사건에 대한 법 집행 기관의 대응을 비판하며 “당국의 처리 방식은 실망스러웠다”고 전했다. 그는 헌법재판소 100미터 이내에서의 집회나 시위는 금지되어 있다고 강조하며 “경찰은 극우 세력의 헌법 기관 공격을 가만히 지켜볼 수 없다”고 말했다.
또한 백 의원은 헌법재판소에 윤 대통령 탄핵 재판에 대해 신속한 판결을 내려줄 것을 촉구했다. “신속한 결정만이 사회적 균열을 치유할 수 있다”고 말하며 “정치적 고려나 극단적인 우파 세력의 위협이 법원의 결정을 지연시켜서는 안 된다”고 밝혔다.
더불어민주당은 이번 공격에 대해 “명백한 폭력 행위이자 테러”라고 규탄하는 성명을 발표했다.
당 대변인 안귀령은 “계란 대신 무기가 있었다면 어땠을까? 그 생각은 무섭다”고 우려를 표명하며, 대통령 탄핵에 반대하는 세력이 “최근 서울서부지방법원의 혼란보다 더욱 폭력적인 충돌이나 유혈 사태를 초래할 수 있다”고 경고했다.
