SK hynix announced on Wednesday that it has shipped samples of its next-generation high-bandwidth memory 4 (HBM4) chip to clients, marking the first such shipment globally and reinforcing its status as a leading supplier of memory chips for artificial intelligence (AI).
The company revealed that it recently provided samples of its 12-layer HBM4 to major clients for qualification testing. HBM4, the sixth generation of high-bandwidth memory, is crucial for enhancing the performance of graphics processing units (GPUs) and other AI accelerator chips.
SK hynix stated that it shipped the HBM4 samples ahead of its original schedule and plans to initiate the qualification process with clients soon, aiming to complete preparations for mass production in the second half of this year.
Initially, the company intended to start mass production of HBM4 in 2026, but it accelerated the timeline in response to client demands. In November, it was reported that a request was made by a prominent client to expedite the supply timeline by six months.
The HBM4 sample chip is said to deliver exceptional speeds necessary for AI memory, achieving a bandwidth capable of processing over 2 terabytes of data per second, equivalent to processing more than 400 full-HD movies in just one second. This represents a speed increase of over 60 percent compared to the previous fifth-generation HBM3e chips.
Additionally, the sample chip boasts the highest capacity among comparable 12-layer memory products, utilizing SK hynix’s advanced mass reflow-molded underfill process, which effectively manages chip warping and enhances heat dissipation, thereby improving product stability.
By providing HBM4 samples to clients, SK hynix is poised to strengthen its leadership position in the global HBM market.
SK hynix previously became the first company in the chip industry to mass-produce fourth-generation HBM3 in 2022 and continued with 8-layer and 12-layer HBM3e in 2024. This timely supply has positioned SK hynix as the primary HBM supplier for Nvidia GPUs and the most profitable memory chipmaker in Korea, surpassing a major competitor in profit last year.
