Director Hwang Byeong-guk of the upcoming crime-action movie "Yadang: The Snitch" was drawn to the story of informants who navigate the complex world between drug dealers and authorities, exchanging confidential information with investigators.
Hwang discovered a news article in 2021 detailing snitches who frequently visit prosecutors' offices, which piqued his interest in their morally ambiguous roles. He expressed that their existence in a gray area made for a compelling film narrative.
At a press event in Seoul, Hwang stated, "They appear to be working legally, yet there's something dubious about them. I thought it would make for an interesting film." The director aims to distinguish "Yadang: The Snitch" from other drug-centric films by focusing on the informant's perspective.
The film stars actor Kang Ha-neul as Lee Kang-su, a man wrongfully imprisoned and recruited by ambitious prosecutor Koo Kwan-hee, played by Yoo Hae-jin, to serve as a snitch. Their covert operation becomes complicated when drug detective Oh Sang-jae, portrayed by Park Hae-joon, becomes involved due to an incident connected to the child of a leading presidential candidate.
Kang emphasized that the movie transcends typical drug crime narratives, remarking, "The scenario is incredibly well-structured, and I couldn't put it down. I read it all in one go."
This film marks Hwang's return to feature directing after 14 years, following the 2011 crime action film "S.I.U." In addition to directing, Hwang has also established himself as a supporting actor, recently featuring in a successful political film.
Kang noted that Hwang's extensive experience as an actor greatly informed his direction, stating, "The director had a keen eye for those details and was great at discussing them with me."
Hwang conducted thorough research on drug addiction, sharing his experiences with severe addicts, including high school students. He aims to raise public awareness about the serious issues of drug abuse while keeping the film engaging for viewers.
Yoo Hae-jin described "Yadang: The Snitch" as "brimming with realism," highlighting its engaging and fast-paced storytelling.
The film is scheduled for release in local theaters on April 23.

감독은 2021년에 검사 사무실을 방문해 정보를 교환하는 밀고자들에 관한 뉴스 기사를 접한 후 그들의 애매모호한 도덕적 입장에 흥미를 느꼈고, 이를 바탕으로 영화를 개발하게 되었다고 전했다.
"그들은 합법적으로 활동하는 것처럼 보이지만, 뭔가 의심스러운 점이 있다. 그들은 회색 지대에 존재한다"고 그는 목요일 서울의 한 기자 회견에서 말했다. "이야기가 흥미로울 것이라고 생각했다."
영화는 밀고자의 역할에 중점을 두고 있으며, 이는 마약 관련 영화가 범람하는 가운데 자신만의 차별성을 갖추려는 노력이 담겨 있다고 감독은 설명했다.
"야당: 밀고자"는 강하늘이 이강수 역을 맡아 부당하게 유죄 판결을 받고 복역 중인 인물로 등장한다. 그는 야망 있는 검사 구관희(유해진)의 요청으로 밀고자로 활동하게 된다. 하지만 국가의 가장 저명한 대통령 후보자와 관련된 사건이 발생하면서 그들의 은밀한 동맹 관계가 예상치 못한 전개를 맞이하게 된다.
강하늘은 이 영화가 전형적인 마약 범죄 영화 이상의 의미를 지닌다고 설명했다.
"시나리오가 정말 잘 구성되어 있어서 그냥 내려놓을 수 없었다. 한 번에 모두 읽었다"고 그는 말했다.
이 영화는 2011년 범죄 액션 영화 "S.I.U." 이후 14년 만에 황 감독의 첫 번째 장편 영화로, 그동안 감독 외에도 다양한 조연으로 활동해 왔으며, 최근에는 2023년 거대 히트작 정치 영화 "12.12: 그날"에 출연했다.
강하늘은 감독의 깊은 연기 이해가 자신의 연기에 큰 도움이 되었다고 강조했다.
"카메라 앞에 서본 사람만이 진정으로 이해할 수 있는 연기의 측면이 있다. 감독은 그런 디테일에 대한 안목이 뛰어나서 나와 함께 잘 논의해 주었다"고 말했다.
황 감독은 마약 중독자와 밀매자에 관한 광범위한 연구를 진행했으며, 심각한 중독자와의 만남을 통해 대중이 이 심각한 문제를 인식하는 동시에 관객들에게 몰입감 있는 영화가 되기를 목표로 했다고 설명했다.
"엑수마"의 유해진은 이 영화를 "현실감 넘치는" 영화로 묘사하며, "흥미롭고 빠른 페이스로 진솔한 이야기를 전달한다"고 덧붙였다.
"야당: 밀고자"는 4월 23일 현지 극장에서 개봉될 예정이다.
