South Korea and the United States are set to conduct "2+2" trade talks in Washington on Thursday, involving their finance and trade ministers. This meeting marks the first round of high-level negotiations aimed at easing U.S. tariffs.
The discussions are scheduled for 8 a.m. local time, which corresponds to 9 p.m. in South Korea. Participants will include South Korean Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun, alongside U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Acting President Han Duck-soo emphasized the government's commitment to achieving a mutually beneficial outcome through calm and serious discussions, prioritizing national interests. Key areas of focus during the talks will include trade balance, shipbuilding, and liquefied natural gas, as highlighted in a recent phone call with the U.S. President.
Following the main talks, Ahn and Greer are scheduled to engage in separate discussions to further address specific trade issues.

이번 회의는 현지 시간으로 오전 8시, 한국 시간으로 오후 9시에 시작되며, 한국 측에서는 재무장관 최상목과 통상장관 안덕근이 참석하고, 미국 측에서는 재무장관 스콧 베센트와 무역대표 제이미슨 그리어가 참석할 예정이다.
한 권한대행은 월요일 정부 회의에서 이 회담 직후 안 장관과 그리어가 별도의 논의를 진행할 것이라고 덧붙였다.
그는 "우리 정부는 미국과의 논의에서 국가 이익을 최우선으로 하여 차분하고 진지한 논의를 통해 양국 모두에게 윈-윈 해법을 찾기 위해 모든 힘을 다할 것"이라고 강조하며, 최근 미국 도널드 트럼프 대통령과의 전화 통화에서 언급된 무역 균형, 조선업, 액화천연가스 등 세 가지 주요 분야를 특히 언급했다.
