This year’s Seoul Queer Culture Festival (SQCF), scheduled for June 14 in downtown Seoul, is in the process of finding a new venue after moving on from its previous location at Seoul Plaza due to an increase in attendees, organizers announced on Tuesday.
Yang Sun-woo, chairperson of the SQCF organizing committee, stated during a press conference that the festival has experienced significant growth, now accommodating over 150,000 participants each year. She emphasized concerns regarding safety at the square, leading to the decision not to return to that location.
The committee has not submitted an application for the use of Seoul Plaza this year and is actively searching for an alternative venue. Yang confirmed that the event will take place in the city center, maintaining the festival's tradition of visibility rather than relocating to a more isolated park or stadium, as some have proposed.
Originally launched in 2000 with around 50 participants in the Daehangno area of northeastern Seoul, the SQCF has expanded significantly over the years.

양선우 SQCF 조직위원장은 서울에서 열린 기자회견에서 “서울광장에서 축제가 열리던 영광의 순간들을 모두가 소중히 여겼다”며 “하지만 매년 15만 명 이상의 참가자를 수용하게 된 이 행사에서 광장의 안전 문제를 고려할 때 다시 그 장소로 돌아가지는 않을 것”이라고 말했다.
위원회는 올해 광장 사용 신청을 하지 않았으며, 대신 대체 장소를 찾고 있다. 그녀는 “확실히 아는 것은 시내 중심에서 진행될 것”이라며 “축제가 전통적으로 해왔던 것처럼 가시성을 지속적으로 추구할 것”이라고 설명했다.
SQCF는 2000년에 서울 동북부의 대학로에서 약 50명의 참가자로 시작되어, 시간이 지남에 따라 성장해왔다.
