Hyundai Motor Group has announced a partnership with the Indonesian government and state-run energy company Pertamina to develop a waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) ecosystem in Indonesia. This announcement was made during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit 2025, held in Jakarta by the Indonesia Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy.
The summit featured discussions among Indonesian government officials and business leaders regarding the country's hydrogen roadmap and key initiatives aimed at supporting the transition to hydrogen energy.
According to Hyundai Motor Group, the W2H model involves fermenting organic waste, such as food, sludge, and livestock manure, to produce biogas. This method is designed to facilitate cost-effective regional hydrogen production by minimizing the need for long-distance transportation and storage.
Hyundai Motor Group has previously implemented W2H technology in South Korea, with projects including a mini hydrogen city in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, and facilities in North Chungcheong Province, such as a food bio center in Chungju and a public sewage treatment plant in Cheongju.

한국 기업에 따르면, W2H 모델은 음식물 쓰레기, 슬러지, 가축 분뇨와 같은 유기 폐기물을 발효하여 바이오가스를 생산하는 방식이다. 이 방법은 장거리 운송 및 저장의 필요성을 줄여 지역 내 저렴한 수소 생산을 가능하게 한다고 회사는 밝혔다.
현대자동차 그룹은 이미 한국에서 파주에 위치한 미니 수소 도시와 충청북도에 있는 음식 바이오 센터, 청주에 있는 공공 하수 처리 시설 등 여러 프로젝트를 통해 W2H 기술을 구현한 바 있다.
