Dutch trumpet player Joep van Rhijn has collaborated with Korean pianist Yoonseung Cho to release a new 50-minute album titled "Between Fact & Fiction." The album delves into the complexities surrounding misinformation and the various perspectives individuals hold.
Van Rhijn, a long-term foreign resident, expressed that the project originated from an interest in the discussions about misinformation and the different "bubbles" people inhabit. He emphasized that while the topic is serious, the interplay between fact and fiction in music and art adds a layer of magic to the experience.
The album features eight tracks that are characterized as pensive, minimalist, and gentle, showcasing the warm sensitivity for which van Rhijn is recognized. He acknowledged the challenges of conveying the theme of fact versus fiction through instrumental jazz, noting that it can be difficult to present a clear storyline for the audience.
Van Rhijn compared the experience of listening to instrumental music to viewing art, where the mood or feeling allows each listener to create their own narrative. He described the flugelhorn as his voice, a tool that facilitates this artistic expression.
