Korea is considering sending a government delegation to the Holy See to express condolences on the passing of Pope Francis, according to the foreign ministry on Tuesday.
The potential delegation would follow an official condolence message sent by acting President Han Duck-soo the previous day. "The dispatch of a condolence delegation is currently under consideration and further details will be shared once they are finalized," a ministry official stated.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican after suffering a stroke and weeks of battling pneumonia.
A memorial has been established at Seoul's Myeongdong Cathedral for the public to pay tribute.
외교부는 화요일에 한국 정부가 프란치스코 교황의 별세에 대해 조의를 표하기 위해 성 베드로 대성당에 정부 대표단을 파견하는 방안을 검토 중이라고 밝혔다.
대표단의 파견은 전날 한덕수 대행 명의로 공식 조의 메시지가 발송된 뒤에 이루어질 예정이다.
외교부 관계자는 "조의 대표단 파견이 현재 고려 중이며, 세부 사항이 확정되면 추가로 발표하겠다"고 말했다.
프란치스코 교황은 월요일에 88세의 나이로 바티칸에 있는 자택에서 뇌졸중과 폐렴 투병 끝에 별세했다.
서울 명동 성당에서는 대중이 조문할 수 있도록 추모 공간이 마련될 예정이다.
