Korea's largest rechargeable battery research center officially opened on Tuesday in Cheongju, aiming to boost the global competitiveness of local businesses in the battery sector, according to the industry ministry.
The newly established Battery Solution Testbed Zone (BST Zone) is designed to provide comprehensive infrastructure for research and testing throughout the entire value chain of rechargeable batteries. This includes various stages from materials and components to cells, modules, and solid-state batteries.
The facility is expected to assist Korean battery manufacturers in the development of new materials by offering valuable data on the physical and chemical properties of materials and components used in secondary batteries, along with safety assessments.
"With the operation of BST Zone, the special industrial complex in North Chuncheong Province will take a leap forward as a strategic hub for secondary battery development," stated the deputy minister for industry policy at the ministry. "The government will continue to expand support for companies and help them gain global competitiveness."

배터리 솔루션 테스트베드 존(BST 존)은 재충전 가능 배터리의 전 가치 사슬에 걸쳐 재료, 구성 요소, 셀, 모듈 및 모든 고체 배터리에 대한 연구와 테스트를 위한 다양한 인프라를 통합한 시설이다.
이 시설은 한국 배터리 기업들이 2차 전지의 재료 및 구성 요소의 물리적 및 화학적 특성에 대한 데이터와 안전성을 평가하는 정보를 제공함으로써 새로운 재료 개발을 지원할 것이다.
산업부의 산업 정책 부차관인 이승렬은 "BST 존의 운영으로 충청북도의 특별 산업 단지가 2차 배터리 개발을 위한 전략적 허브로 도약할 것"이라고 말했다. "정부는 기업에 대한 지원을 계속 확장하고 이들이 글로벌 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있도록 도울 것이다."
