A Korean-led consortium has secured a contract to carry out the initial design phase of a U.S. research reactor project, according to the science ministry. This represents the first time South Korea has exported its reactor technology to the United States.
The consortium, which includes the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, Hyundai Engineering, and U.S. nuclear power engineering firm MPR, has signed an agreement with Missouri University to initiate the early phase of the Next Generation Missouri University Research Reactor (NextGen MURR) project.
The initial phase, referred to as the "design study package," will involve assessing the construction site conditions for the planned 20-megawatt thermal reactor and conducting an environmental impact assessment for the project.
The ministry described Korea's successful bid for the Missouri reactor deal as a "monumental achievement," noting that the country began developing its nuclear reactor capabilities by acquiring a research reactor, TRIGA Mark-II, from the U.S. in July 1959. Following the Missouri deal, the government plans to establish further developments in nuclear technology.

과학부는 미주리 원자로 계약 체결이 한국의 원자력 기술력 확보에 있어 "중대한 성과"라고 강조했다. 한국은 1959년 7월 미국에서 TRIGA Mark-II 연구용 원자로를 도입하며 원자로 개발을 시작하였다.
미주리 계약을 시작으로 정부는 한국의 원자력 산업을 발전시키기 위한 계획을 다각적으로 수립할 예정이다.
