Korean filmmakers have called on the Culture Minister to halt the recruitment process for a new head of the Korean Film Archive (KOFA), accusing the minister of being associated with the “insurrection forces” linked to the martial law declaration by the recently impeached President.
With less than 50 days remaining until the presidential election, following the Constitutional Court's decision to remove the former President, the Coalition for Overcoming Crisis in the Film Industry—comprising 18 local filmmakers' guilds—issued a statement on Friday.
The coalition's statement emphasized that the minister, who previously served as a spokesperson during the emergency martial law period, lacks the authority to initiate the appointment process for the director of KOFA, which is deemed essential for the Korean film industry and its artistic integrity. They are demanding an immediate suspension of the recruitment process.
