Two-time LPGA winner Ryu Hae-ran is tied at the top of the leaderboard following the weather-affected opening round of the season's first major tournament in Texas. Ryu completed a bogey-free round of seven-under 65 at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, on Thursday.
Ryu shares the first-round lead with Liu Yan of China. During her round, Ryu achieved back-to-back birdies at holes 2 and 3, followed by another pair at 7 and 8. On the back nine, she birdied the par-4 10th and two par-5 holes, the 13th and 18th.
The score of 65 marks Ryu's lowest on the LPGA Tour since posting a 64 in the third round of The Annika driven by Gainbridge at Pelican last November. Ryu, who finished tied for fifth at last year's Chevron Championship held at the same course, expressed her desire to build on her past positive experiences at the venue.
Highlighting her performance, Ryu noted the effectiveness of her putting, requiring only 24 putts during her initial 18 holes. "Today, my putter was pretty good, and I just want to try and trust in my golf," she remarked after the round. "That was amazing today because I changed the putter last week."
