Former major leaguer Choi Ji-man will enlist in the military in May, as announced by his Seoul-based agency on Friday. Choi is set to begin his mandatory military service on May 15, just four days before his 34th birthday.
Choi spent his entire professional career in the United States after signing with the Seattle Mariners out of high school in July 2009. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 2016 and subsequently played for the New York Yankees and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Choi established himself as a major leaguer with the Tampa Bay Rays, following a midseason trade in 2018. He achieved career highs with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs in 2019. In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Choi became the first Korean position player to appear in the World Series, although the Rays lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
During his tenure with the Rays, Choi gained popularity among fans for his acrobatic splits at first base, which helped him field low throws effectively. After the 2022 season, the Rays traded Choi to the Pittsburgh Pirates, who later sent him to the San Diego Padres.

최는 2016년 로스앤젤레스 에인절스에서 메이저 리그 베이스볼(MLB) 데뷔를 하였고, 이후 뉴욕 양키스와 밀워키 브루어스에서 뛰었다.
하지만 최는 2018년 중반 트레이드를 통해 탬파 베이 레이스에서 기량을 펼치기 시작했다.
그는 2019년 19홈런, 63타점을 기록하며 개인 최고의 성과를 올렸다.
2020년 팬데믹으로 단축된 시즌 동안 최는 레이스 소속으로 월드 시리즈에 출전한 첫 한국 포지션 선수가 되었지만, 팀은 로스앤젤레스 다저스에게 패배했다.
레이스 시절 최는 낮은 송구를 잡기 위해 첫 번째 베이스에서 아크로바틱한 스플릿으로 팬들에게 사랑받았다.
2022년 시즌 이후, 레이스는 최를 피츠버그 파이리츠로 거래했고, 이후 파이리츠는 그를 샌디에이고로 보내게 된다.
