Korean Air has been selected as the preferred bidder for a project aimed at upgrading the UH-60 helicopter utilized by Korea's armed forces, with the project valued at 961.3 billion won ($673 million). The bid was awarded by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on Wednesday.
The consortium, led by Korean Air, also includes LIG Nex1 and Collins Aerospace. The UH-60 Black Hawk is a multi-purpose helicopter employed by the Republic of Korea Army and Air Force for special operations.
The modernization project will enhance the performance of a total of 36 UH-60 helicopters, focusing on upgrades to digital cockpits, engines, survivability systems, and communication suites, as stated by Korean Air. Additionally, the airline will provide integrated depot maintenance and force integration support as part of the project.
Korean Air has a history with the UH-60, having engaged in licensed production from 1991 to 1999. The airline currently offers depot maintenance and partial performance upgrades and modifications for the helicopter, drawing on decades of technical expertise in its maintenance.

업그레이드 내용에는 디지털 조종석, 엔진, 생존 시스템, 통신 시스템 개선이 포함된다. 대한항공은 또한 이 프로젝트에 따라 통합 창고 유지보수 및 전력 통합 지원을 제공할 계획이다.
대한항공의 UH-60 관련 사업은 1991년부터 1999년까지의 라이센스 생산을 포함하고 있으며, 현재 헬리콥터에 대한 창고 유지보수와 부분 성능 업그레이드 및 수정 작업을 수행하고 있다.
수십 년간 쌓아온 유지보수 기술 전문성이 프로젝트에 적용될 예정이다.
