Korean shipping companies and shipbuilders are poised to benefit from the recent decision by the U.S. Trade Representative to impose new port fees on ships constructed or operated by Chinese firms.
Analysts point out that the minimal presence of Chinese-built vessels in the fleet of Korea’s largest container carrier, HMM, suggests that more freight owners may choose this carrier for shipments to the United States. "'Chinese-built vessels account for only 6 percent of HMM's entire container fleet — the lowest among global shipping companies,'" stated an analyst.
HMM has not placed any orders with Chinese shipyards, indicating that it is unlikely to be adversely affected by the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China. Out of HMM's 83 container ships, only five were built in China, and among these, two are rented and will be returned soon, while the remaining three primarily serve Southeast Asian routes.
"HMM is expected to gain the upper hand over competitors in securing cargo volume, as it is free from U.S. regulations on Chinese-built ships," observed another analyst, indicating a strong outlook for the company amidst the new trade policies.
Korean shipbuilders are also expected to benefit from this development, potentially increasing their market share in the wake of the U.S. restrictions on Chinese shipping vessels.
